Abstract:In order to overcome limits of regular tracespatial sampling in filtering and signal loss orincomplete ground roll suppression due to inaccu-rate filtering window selection, we introduce inthis paper a new method based on empirical modedecomposition(EMD) for ground roll suppression.EMD decomposes adaptively from signal high fre-quency to low frequency into oscillating compo-nents called intrinsic mode functions(IMFs),which can be also regarded as wave number rangesfrom high to low in spatial direction. Moreover,IMFl represents mostly high wave number data.Since ground rolls are mostly distributed in lowfrequency and high wave number,we can removeeffectively ground rolls by casting out IMFl of lowfrequency obtained by EMD in special sequence.Inaddition,EMD does not need regular trace spatialsampling. Therefore, this method can be regardedas an auto-adaptive f-k filter with a frequency-de-pendent,high-cut wave number filtering property.Applications to model data and real field data indi-cite that this method suppresses not only groundrolls, but also greatly maintains signals.
