Abstract:The characteristics of tipper parameter in magnetotelluric data are analysed detailedly.Tipper anomaly mainly reflects the horizontal nonuniformity of geoelectric structure.Amplitude of tipper anomaly depends on not only the conductivity contract between the media at two sides of horizontal nonuniform interface but also the thickness and conductivity of the overburden along with the field frequency.The frequency characteristic of tipper anomaly can he employed to quantitatively interpret the thickness of overburden above vertical fault.In tipper data interpretation,the template matching technique for image processing can he used to ascertain vertical fault and resistivity distribution in real data.The tipper data from a field traverse have been processed and interpreted without consulting any geological material.The interpreted results show good agreement with the known geologic knowledge,and have higher resolution and better reliability than usual results.
