Abstract:The Southwest area of Qaidam Basin has property of peripheral foreland basin,it was generated, developed and formed by extruding force from the south, and its evolution history could be divided into 4 stages, the flexure depressing stage, thrusting stage, intensive thrusting stage, and surface slippage folding stage.Based on some characteristics, such as intensity of fault activity, basement's involvement degree and fault deformation, the faults in this paper in Southwest area of Qaidam Basin were divided into the following 4 categories, the basement-involved high angle thrust fault, the basement-involved low angle thrust fault, the adjustable thrust fault and the high angle reverse thrust fault. The basement-involved high angle thrust fault and the basement-involved low angle thrust fault had coupling and synchronized development relationship with the orogeny uplifting and basin subsiding, their fault plane dips were related with intensity of the Kunlun orogeny extruding, which,to a certain extent, controlled the formation and deposition of the substructural unit in the basin. The adjustable thrust fault, which played a role in adjusting transverse displacement and deformation difference for the extruding blocks and acted as a structural pivot, actually had no control function for stratigraphic distribution, high angle reverse thrust fault, which was the smaller fault and was formed later than others, was not related with sedimentation.
