Abstract:In conventional oil & gas reservoir exploration, AVO has been widely used as a good tool. However, unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs such as shale gas reservoir are rather different in accumulation mechanism, oil & gas occurrences characteristics, and mineral constituent. To study AVO feasibility in shale gas reservoirs, we analyze in the paper in AVO forward modeling, seismic response characteristics from different angle stack, logging data crossplots, and inversion quality control. We have accurately predicted shale gas from surrounding rock using P-impedance, S-impedance, and Possion's ratio obtained from AVO inversion. The prediction is well consistent with latter drilling results. Our research shows that AVO is feasible for shale gas reservoir prediction.
